History of MPN

Ron Hutcheon and Joe Mouris

Deep River, Ontario, Canada

In 1996, we set up a small private partnership, Microwave Properties North (MPN) (registered in Ontario, Canada) to continue to make available to both customers and collaborators the high temperature dielectric properties measurement system which we started developing in 1989 at Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd, Chalk River Labs. This was the result of AECL deciding to eliminate its Physics Division, leaving no home for our internationally recognized dielectric properties work! Thus we purchased the equipment from AECL and continued to develop both the measurement system and the business. We now have fully automated, computer-controlled systems for measuring high temperature complex dielectric constants and magnetic susceptibilities in the microwave range. Most of our measurements are aimed at simulating microwave processing systems by using small samples in controlled atmospheres following a prescribed heating and cooling curve.

Our past customers include many groups working at the forefront of developing innovative microwave-based industrial processes or new materials for microwave system applications, such as Dow-Corning, Kimberly Clark, SCHOTT Glas, INTEVEP, Geological Survey of Canada, Ceradyne, Cameco Corp., Sherrit Inc., El Dorado Engineering,

We have also done collaborative work with several university groups, including Prof. David Clark, Materials Science & Engineering, Virginia Tech, Prof. Chris Pickles, Queens` University Mining Engineering, Prof. Jason Zhang, Dept. Chem. Eng., Univ. of Ottawa
